Who needs the theatre

Last year, in autumn, we suggested to have a weekly magazine of theatre. Here we are in 2010 and Yorick goes on! I do not intent to speak about the projects on the ongoing year – you will explore them when the time comes – or about what happened and, especially, did not happen in the Romanian theatre in 2009. Naturally, there were festivals, there were premieres, there were discussions, and disputes, there was the Uniter Gala, the crisis outburst which – they say – hit the National Festival of Theatre and more. And Gheorghe Dinică died!

We do not want to sum up either or to discuss about the quality and the quantity of last year productions on Romanian scenes or what premieres are in progress. But we intend to find out who needs theatre today and what kind of theatre today public needs. It is not by chance that last year, in December, we started a series of inquiries in the faculties from Bucharest called „Why students (don’t) go to the theatre…”. Some of the answers – to use a polished description – were inviting to meditation …For example: „I do not know exactly what I want to see. I know for sure that I do not want SF, I do not want vulgarity under any form (which delighted the highschool colleagues during a play) and by no means I do not want to see Caragiale. I want to see the antic tragedies on the scene.” Or: „The ideal theatre: classical and modern plays, under an authentic approach, lacking the stage manager’s „folly”. „A theatre workshop for children, with performances.”. Or: „It should not be boring, it should be funny. It should be a sort of Parthenon where only comedies are played”…

The answer we expected came unexpectedly, when we proposed a competition on theatre chronicles. One of them came from a highschool girl whose „secret” we discovered with a joy I had to share with you. It is called „We want more (people to come to the) theatre”…

„Because it is polite to introduce ourselves, we chose to break the ice on this blog (http://www.vrmmt.blogspot.com) by saying a few things about us. All three of us are fond of theatre, we are students at the National College „Gheorghe Roşca Codreanu” from Bârlad and we want to start a promotion campaign of the Theatre „Victor Ion Popa”, as well as the other theatres all over the country. You may ask yourself „Why theatre?”. The answer is not complicated. Because we like what we see there and the thought that it may disappear one day terrifies us. Moreover, we want to share with others the joy of watching a play and to even make them join us in our attempt to promote this form of art which, unfortunately, was overshadowed by the tehnological evolution.

Therefore, we invite to whom it may concern to join us.” This is all.

What do we want for 2010? To succeed together – as a wonderful lady wished us who has loved and written about the Theatre for years – to move at least one particle of the dust on today’s Romanian scene board.
